After being diagnosed decades ago, only a handful of people know my condition. Many of them no longer are friends shortly after I shared the news with them. What are your thoughts about who to tell and when?

It might be helpful to share your condition with those who you trust and who have shown themselves to be understanding and supportive in the past. These are the people who are likely to offer you the empathy and support you need. When to tell them can vary—some find it easier to share early in a relationship to establish trust and open communication

One person shared, "I’m pretty open with my diagnosis around people, but it depends on who you’re comfortable telling. It’s a pretty personal thing, so I’d sit there and think about how it makes you feel knowing you have it. Then maybe make a list of people you’re ok with knowing." Another person suggested, "When I was first diagnosed I got tired of telling people because I felt like i always ended up comforting them…When my now husband and I were dating I told him after only a couple of weeks because the pandemic was starting and I wanted him to understand why I had to be extra careful due to a compromised immune system."
