Recent studies are showing bipolar is a progressive disease. Before the general understanding was that there is full recovery between and after mood episodes, but these studies are showing that each manic and depressive episode can permanently damage your brain. Going totally without treatment can lead to a condition that mimics frontotemporal dementia, basically dementia with inappropriate behaviors. Personally this terrifies me. How can I cope with this knowledge that my condition is destroying my brain and therefore who I am?

I have no control over that. The control I have in my life is right now. I don’t want to have a bad time now because I’m worried about a bad time in the future. Be who you are now, do everything you can now. And try to get as healthy as you can for the sake of the future anyway.

I believe there are also studies that show when someone with bipolar disorder is medicated effectively, there are signs of regeneration and reversal of damage. This info was given to me by a nurse practitioner during a bipolar group I take part in, so I trust that info. There are lots of scary truths out there about bipolar, but also some great ones. Let me know if you'd like to chat.

I am living proof this is true I am staying in my house and talking to no one. I don’t shower nothing. Because I don’t care. I used to be absolutely beautiful. U can do something about it. Stay on top of it. Never stay with a dr who just keeps throwing different pills at u doesn’t explain and they don’t work. Find a new one every single time. Ask for your treatment plan, what is it and you want it explained. Don’t just sign. Don’t just go along because u are scared. Keep a good support system. When u lose support u lose everything. Support is people who care not people who take advantage or lie. If u have anymore questions inbox me

You just have to accept it and do your best to avoid triggers for new episodes. I'd recommend looking into DBT, especially concept or radical acceptance. There's also a cool Tara Brach's book about radical acceptance. It's not worth it fighting reality.
