I’ve just began to unmask after 20 years. I didn’t consider myself to have sensory issues before, but now I can’t leave the house without headphones and sunglasses. The sudden onset of frequent meltdowns and shutdowns has been really difficult to deal with. It feels like a switch in my brain has been flipped from hyposensitive to hypersensitive, and I’m having a hard time adjusting. Anyone else experience this? Any advice?

No advice here, but I really relate to this! I sometimes feel like I’m faking since it’s been such a quick uptick in sensitivity in just a couple months since realizing I was autistic. It’s helped a lot to realize that if I really was “faking”, I wouldn’t fake when I am alone and still uncomfortable I hope someone can give you good advice that I can come back to and read!

yes! I think I just never really recognized the feelings before, and now that I have words for them I can consciously identify them- I think they've been there the whole time though.

Me too!!! It's so bizarre how I coped for most of my life and that now I can't cope with all these things anymore! Just because I found out I'm autistic! Jeez...

I have the same thing! It seems to be a common experience for unmasking to lead to more sensory issues. I usually remember times I was overstimulated (record it if you have bad memory like me), and use that to reassure myself I'm not faking. Bonus if the overstimulation was by yourself. Treating yourself as autistic even when it's hard also helps lots too!

@Butterflame I have wondered if it was related to overwhelm! Thank you for sharing
