I have been extremely worried over the last couple of days. As part of my routine check up, my doctor called me over to discuss that he has found some abnormalities in my blood work. He says there is very high amount of white blood cells and protein in my blood. he mentioned that he would like to like to run further tests to confirm or rule out multiple Myeloma ..Has someone ever gone through something similar before? What did you do in this situation? I am 58 and I don’t know how I’ll go about all of this.

In my case, I sought a second opinion and consulted with a hematologist. I also did my own research, but it's essential to rely on credible sources and not Google diagnosis yourself into a frenzy!

Sorry hun…First of all, take a deep breath! please don't jump to conclusions or assume the worst. High white blood cell count and protein in your blood can have various explanations. Multiple myeloma is just one possibility. In my case, I had to undergo a bone marrow biopsy, PET scan, and other tests to confirm the diagnosis. I know how this feels, but be strong and stay positive

I was 63 when I received a "bad" blood test. I was sent to a hemotoglogist (a doctor who specializes in blood problems) who said he wanted further tests. I said OK and when I went back the following week he told me I had MM. I can't stress this enough - you have to get the suggested test, if you have Multiple Myeloma, then you have it. If you do, then you go to a Multiple Myeloma specialist or at least a hematologist who is familiar with treating the disease. The disease isn't going to go away by ignoring it. You'll do fine, if you do have it. They have many treatments now to for it and getting more all the time. I've had it 6 years now and I'm doing great. A friend recently told me "you're in better shape than 80% of the people I know our age, and they don't even have cancer." Last thing, you have to keep a positive attitude, which I will agree is not easy, but you can do it. Best of luck.
