so my partner’s going through a depression rn and he’s acting different. it just makes me sad because i can’t really do anything to help, unlike when i’m depressed and i use him for comfort and want to talk to him about it, he just distances himself from me and i don’t know what to do. and i already have lots of mental health issues so seeing my one major support system depleted just makes me spiral so easily. anyone else experience this?

thanks for understanding guys, i know i shouldn’t just have one support system. it’s just hard to make my friends and family care/understand what i’m going through, and he already does. but i’m trying to be there for him however i can, even though i don’t know how much i’m helping

They come back around eventually. I know it's hard but in the end he will show u love and you will see himself acting more himself

Yes right now actually
I've experienced this, too, mostly with my ex-boyfriend. I would snap at him over not being there for me, or not knowing how to help me, when I wasn't effectively communicating to begin with and I was ignoring his own experiences with mental illness. I regret it now, but it's so hard to recognize the black-and-white thinking in the moment. Having multiple people in your support group is always helpful, but so is countering the spiral as best you can. Your partner being distant is a trigger for an already emotionally vulnerable mind, so recalling times that they've been there for you before and communicating to your partner that you appreciate them and are willing to support them keeps that communication open. None of it's easy, because trust isn't easy, but with time it becomes worth it.
We always need a back up. Putting that kind of thing on one person is not always fair. We need a network of support to really manage our issues. I suggest you reach outside your immediate partnership for support and do your best to also find ways to support your partner.
