I went to my pcp today and was wondering if I should look for a new one. I told her about all the weird symptoms I'd been having, and pretty all she did was say, "You should refer to your specialist." I don't see my specialists for another month, and I need help now. the whole appointment, she never even touched me. No physical exam (my symptoms definitely warranted it), she didn't listen to my lungs and heart or anything. the only vitals taken where my heart rate and blood pressure. I ask about a certain specialist for something that a) I've been struggling with for years and b) have a long family history of. She reluctantly gave me a referral, but also said "you know, your labs are normal (*eyeroll*) they might now even see you". is this normal for a pcp? my mom went with me to my appointment, and she said it was weird. are these red flags? should I look for a new pcp? all she's been good for is referrals

This is just my personal opinion, but I see red flags. Based on your description, she was unprofessional, unempathetic, and did not seem to address your valid concerns, and in fact negated them. While she is a doctor, she is providing a service to you, and if you feel the service is inadequate / you were not respected as a patient, you are well within your right to go elsewhere. I had a gynecologist who did the same - I dropped her and went with a doctor the community (EDS, in my case) felt was one of the best in my area. I am so happy I did that. You know yourself best. Trust your gut and your impression of the scenario

Wow I'm sorry you were just dismissed that way. Very unprofessional. It's definitely time to seek a new pcp immediately as sometimes it can take awhile to get an appointment with a new Dr. Good luck šŸ™Œ

Huge red flags. I have had numerous pcp docs across the three states I lived inā€”this is not normal or acceptable, by any means. Iā€™ve had some pretty lousy care, and seen some apathetic doctors, but this is lower even than that. Nowhere near the bare minimum standard of care. You deserve so, SO much betterā€”please, if at all possible, find a new PCP immediately. This kind of gaslighting, general disrespect and negligence is never okay, and will never serve your health and well being.

Everything you mentioned is a red flag. This person is NOT invested in your care. Fire this doc and find a new one. I know that's easier said than done, but this person is ignoring your issues and will ultimately end up making you more ill.
