Ive been struggling with my anxiety a lot lately and I think it's causing me to lose my temper at small things. I get extremely worked up over nothing and end up getting mad at someone and then crying and hitting myself. I know I shouldn't be upset over these things, but I can't help it. I feel so out of control of my own body and it's stressing me out. Like I'm watching my reaction, but I feel helpless to it. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Do you have any advice on how to get control over my emotions?

Totally been there. I have been tested for autism, I am on the spectrum. I know for myself, I have to get in a quiet space and immerse myself in my faith… Whether that means reading the Bible, sitting and listening to worship music, singing while I’m on the yoga mat with headphones on… It helps calm and fill my spirit so much.

I had to sit down and journal every bit of it that was inside of me, and then spend some time with my prayer journal. Just by myself with coffee and Jesus. And then be very intentional about everything I did for 48 hours.

I have a lot of anxiety around my immediate environment. When we have to move things around the house or replace a large appliance. I get very upset and short tempered. Often when I'm anxious I think I feel overstimulated inside and outside of my body, so it makes me lash out because I can't process anything going on and I want to crawl out of my skin.

I had this problem back when I was first diagnosed with GAD and dealing with serious stressors in my home/school life and buried traumas from my past that I wasn't even quite aware of until I worked through it in therapy. I felt anxious all the time to the point of being completely irritable and angry at any inconvenience or mistake. I still struggle with having a misplaced anger response when I'm really stressed out and end up blowing up at some "minor" thing, so I get what you mean. I think what helps me calm down and put things back into perspective is to realize when I'm getting worked up and what the stressor causing that response is, then removing myself from the situation physically if possible and taking a few minutes to focus on just breathing and letting my body calm down from the stress response. Then once I'm calmer I can reflect on why I may have responded the way I did to that stimuli and how I can approach it with a level head next time it happens. The key is to take yourself out of the fight-flight stressed headspace that's causing you to escalate and try to consider it rationally, even though it's hard to do that when you're really anxious. It helps if you can realize when you're starting to feel anxious/overwhelmed and taking as many breaks for yourself as you need to feel calmer. I hope this helps!!! 🤗

@royalty My doctors have debated bipolar for years and I know I don't have bpd, but I'd like to get tested for autism. It makes it extremely difficult to be around other people when I can't even predict how I'm going to react. It's so frustrating to feel so out of control of my own body. How do you cope with sudden, irrational behaviors?

As someone with both borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder know exactly what you mean. My BPD prevents me from feeling in control of anything and I dissociate when I get worked up. My BD does the same minus the dissociation. Same with my autism when I get overwhelmed, I feel like everything is too tight and I want to rip my skin off lol. I'm not saying "you have these serious disorders" I'm just saying I know exactly how you feel.
