I need help trying to figure out an at home cheap antidepressant. My depression has been horrible lately as well as my anxiety and bipolar. I no longer have insurance and also have 2 small children and the prescription medications haven't worked for me in the past because they made me a complete zombie. What can I do to avoid the crippling experience of trial and error with medications?

@Zoey_Val b vitamins are water solvable, so it’s nearly impossible to overdo it. Take all you want and you’ll just pee out any excess!

I’ve found that B12 complex vitamins help with depression it made me feel more awake and happy I am still trying to figure out the dosage however as I am a tiny person and need to take a smaller amount

One expensive option is to get a genetic test for medicines, it’s not normally covered by insurance anyways and I think it’s around $200 but they swab your cheek and let you know what medicines are most compatible with your biology so you don’t have to trial and error so much, you know upfront which are least likely to give you side effects. That said, there are OTC treatments such as St. John’s wort, Sam-E, high dose fish oil, and other important supplements like b12, inositol, methylfolate etc

The only antidepressant/anti anxiety medication that has not made me feel like a zombie is Buspirone. It takes a couple of weeks to actually kick in and for me at least I have to take it 3 times a day which is sometimes hard to remember. Also, always try to buy prescription drugs at the Walmart pharmacy, they have the best prices I’ve seen so far. Hope this helps ❤️

@Lanawinters I appreciate you responding but I actually was on buspirone 3x a day as well when I was younger and they had me taking it and abilify 3x a day at the same time. Plus trazodone for insomnia at night. It made me feel so zombified. I'm glad it works for you though but it was one of my worst experiences with medication I think I had ever had

I used to take gabatrol/gabamax it works well and you don't need to take it every day, it helps with both depression and anxiety.

ok.. so I was taking 5-HTP for like 2 years, it’s a vitamin. you can get it over the counter. that helped a lot. if I could go back and keep doing it, I would.. now i’m on Cymbalta which has worked wonders! it’s the only thing that keeps me stable. it gives me energy as well! so I normally take it when I wake up. i’ve had the worst experiences w meds, but cymbalta by far has been the only prescription med that makes me feel good!

@kk062001 the only thing I do suggest, is getting an instant release anxiety pill. I use it rarely. but it helps for my days that I have flashbacks and can’t seem to get out of them.

@kk062001 thank you so much. My anxiety has been eating away at me recently because I know I need to get back on meds for my kids but all through highschool and some of middle school I was on prescription meds and couldn't even respond in conversation I was just really dazed and frankly don't remember much from that elongated period of time. It scares me to think I could be like that again with my children only being a year and a half and 3 months old
