Hello! So AP testing scores came out and it made me feel really cruddy because I have such bad testing anxiety and it causes me to just not be able to test well. I have gotten poorer scores than my friends who I knew just the same amount as on the topic, yet even with studying I get flustered and forget everything if I don’t continuously memorize a certain thing for the test. I hate it so much and it makes me feel like I don’t know as much. Though, I DO know in my mind that testing isn’t really testing your knowledge and it just tests if you know how to test, but I can’t help but feel dumb to when I compare to others. It’s even worse in my AP classes when everyone automatically got the information they just learned and I am still processing because my brain just thinks about everything all the time and I have to sort of get around the other things in my mind to grasp a concept if that makes sense. I don’t want to have to figure out how to test, and next school year my two AP classes have an alternative pay for college class option where you get the credits if you get a passing grade without the end of the year test so I don’t feel like I need to learn how to test. Anyway, I just want to know about others and their testing anxiety experience if they have any. My therapist knows about it but I really don’t want to change it because I totally don’t think testing is really the best way to go, in fact SAT isn’t even needed for the college I want to go to so I don’t care much.

Let me give you some perspective. I'm a PhD student in Analytical Chemistry currently. That is the highest degree that a chemist can receive. Guess what I got on most of my AP Chem exams in high school? A 70. I got a 3 on the exam and didn't even get college credit for it. I failed an entire chemistry course in college because of my testing anxiety. But guess what? I still made it into a graduate program, I have a 3.7 now because I learned how to study and only saw myself in a race with myself. There is no point in comparing yourself to anyone else- they are not dealing with your feelings and problems. Why is it fair to compare yourself to people? Go to therapy, and start to find ways to control the anxiety. Propanolol and Klonopin were what changed the entire game for me and allowed me to calm down for exams. And when I was in control of my anxiety, it got easier. AP exams and classes do not matter that much in the long run. I teach undergraduate chemistry, and I think it's best that you actually take what you are comfortable with but is still a little challenge. But you go to college to learn college material and a lot of AP courses aren't run like actual college classes. It's impossible to replicate college level at high school because it's a lot different experience. I hope this helps give you a little perspective. This isn't the end of the world!

@chronicchemist I second this!! college is way different than high school, and working a job is wayyyy different than them both. you will be able to make progress to the place where you'll excel, no matter how difficult it is now

@chronicchemist Thank you!! I for sure want to take control more of it and really I only care about the content and what I learn for my future career anyways—consciously I know that for a fact. I will get better at it!!

Also, go with the flow and say forget these stupid test if that's the way the wind blows you. Having little control gives lots of control over yourself. Just be, what feels right is right. YOU are never making a wrong step in life even when it feels normal.

Ok that was giving me anxiety just reading it 😮‍💨😵‍💫😵 So I personally sucked at test taking due to my own anxiety as a kid and adult. I would get the shakes and terrible diarrhea 🤦🏾‍♀️ I couldn't even make it to the building without wanting to go 💩💩💩 So my mom literally would pray. She always specifically asked Gods Angels to take over my hands and eyes. She would put her hands over them and even though I didn't feel it work. I guess I played a trick on myself and said yes, God is in control and not me. So whatever happens is Gods will...so like...I went with the flow. Now I'm great at taking test, mind over matter. I'm the problem and I realized I had to psych myself out.
