What is it?

Retinopathy of prematurity refers to a condition which is characterized by abnormal growth of vessels in the retina of premature infants. Typically, it affects those who are born under 31 weeks of pregnancy. It usually resolves without any treatment and leaves no damage. It could become more complicated and extend to the vitreous that fills the center of the eye. It could lead to scarring of the retina, retinal detachment and blindness. Treatment depends on the severity and it may include laser therapy, cryotherapy, and medications.
