What are some ways to stop skin picking, specifically the fingers. An occurrence happened at work showing I have an issue, and it was hard to handle for me personally knowing it has to do with a bad habit that just needs to stop. My psychiatrist said it’s like nail biting and not that bad. I’m feeling pain from wearing rubber gloves at work for an hour. It stops the picking but the picking done before just burns from sweat. The only other way I stop it is putting on false nails. I need to stop it somehow cuz I don’t have the money for false nails at this time.

Some suggestions to stop skin picking include painting your nails, using fidget rings or other fidget toys to keep your hands occupied, and keeping up with moisturizing and trimming off hangnails as they pop up. One person suggested training a pet to notice the behavior and interrupt it. Another suggestion was to put Elmer's glue on the skin, let it dry, then pick that off as a harmless alternative. Reading a book or being on your phone were also mentioned as distractions.
