Ive struggled with self injury for at least 6 years, everyone thinks ive been clean for 3 but really ive just switched from cutting to banging my head. What other methods for release are there ? Have you stopped self harming completely and how did you do it??

Distraction is nice and all, but the reason i do it is to release very strong emotions or to stop myself before i explode at someone else. I genuinely appreciate all the tips, ill have to try the smashing thing

i havenā€™t fully recovered but sometimes what helps me is getting those cooky but intriguing games on your phone and playing them till you feel better, itā€™s a helpful distraction.

Rubbing something course like a brush or spiky ball against my skin, drawing hard on my skin, sometimes just twisting the skin on my forearm helps. Also using cool/cold beads, bottled drinks, or ice on the skin helps

While it doesn't completely satiate it, it helps for me to put a rubber band around my wrist and snapping it against my wrist, and also I take markers and rub marks all over my skin. If all else fails, buy a bunch of thrift store plates and bowl and smash them if you can. It helps release the emotions.

distraction really helps, it does sound dumb at first but force yourself to replace it with other activities. painting really worked for me
