So today I was taking a written final exam and by the end of it my hand was in SO much pain. This always happens, but today I was more curious about it. I had flashbacks to elementary school where in 2nd grade my parents made my teacher send me home with extra handwriting homework (mine was illegible) and those giant shell-looking pencil grips that legit felt like torture to try and use. (None of the aforementioned parties suspected me to be autistic at the time… afab problems) Now, since I’ve been reviewing my past in a new way after realizing my ASD, I google image search “autistic pencil grip” and… There it is. My lifelong tightly painfully wrapped pencil grip in a bunch of the photos.(I even also have a fun extra feature where my index finger does the ‘swan neck’ hyper flex due to my EDS hypermobility) I have to be honest with myself and acknowledge that this is gonna really physically mess up my hand in the long run. I think more than I might even suspect. But at the same time I genuinely think that there’s no way and hell I can change how I hold a pencil. Can anyone relate / have advice for relief from this / accommodations that have made writing a better experience for you?
