what do i do when my best friend and i both have ed’s?? i’ve had mine for almost a year now and he just started to develop his. he swears it’s not my fault but i can’t help but feel partially responsible anyway or at LEAST like i’m enabling them to do worse. i don’t want to be in this forever and i want to recover soon but he seems like he doesn’t want to anytime soon. and my ed is very competitive by nature so idk if i can do it without him. what do i do?

I struggle with this too. My boyfriend had an ED for nearly all of his life, and I can’t help but get triggered by him because I always feel like he is “better and it” than I am. He’s very uncaring about the fact that he has an ED, and doesn’t want to recover. I do find that it’s hard to recover when interacting with a person who has an ED and doesn’t wish to recover, because that person will unintentionally “encourage” the ED

that’s such a difficult situation, wow. first of all, never attribute other people’s mental health issues to your own like that. your disordered eating habits are not contagious by default— your friend likely developed his disorder through an array of unrelated factors. the best thing you can possibly do for him right now is to inspire him to recover by recovering yourself. share the positives of your journey and offer to help him, too. in the end, though, recovery is not something you can push on someone. if he doesn’t WANT to recover, your help will not be accepted. this, and his unwillingness to recover, are not in any way your fault. recovery is even harder than the disorder itself, i know. i’ve been there and i’m still there. we have to take it day by day, truly. you don’t have to go cold turkey, but even making small, momentary changes in your unhealthy habits make a difference. i believe in you, and i believe in your friend. inspire each other to become better versions of yourself. best of luck! <3
