Dealing with early satiety and nausea on Plaquenil

Does anyone who takes Plaquenil (Hydroxychloriquine) struggle with early satiety (feeling full too quickly) and lots of nausea? If so, how do you deal with it? My rheum has adjusted my dose and suggested I take it after a meal, but I always end up not being able to stomach dinner.

Can you help? Connect today

On my! Yes ! I have been on plaquenil for almost 3 years and have had to make adjustments. Do you mind me asking you your dose? To avoid nausea / not being able to eat. If it’s the weekend and I have to double my dose I do I do one in the am ( 1-2 hours after my synthroid with my breakfast) then one at lunch or with a pm snack. I have a hard time sleeping if I take it after 3pm If it’s a weekday and it’s half the dose I take then I only take in AM with breakfast. If you can tolerate dairy it’s helpful to take it with dairy

For me, I wasn’t able to fall asleep when I take it late in the afternoon. I was informed it could cause sleep difficulties / weird dreams but wasn’t a major side effect. My friend who is on it has no issues taking in at dinner time/ later in the day.

Indigestion/ nausea I believe is the most common side effect.

I was recently reduced from 200mg 2x a day to just 200mg once a day. It has caused me to lose so much weight

Yes I had that same issue. Hopefully the stomach symptoms resolve with once a day & taking it with food/dairy if able

I can eat in the morning. Late afternoon/evening is when the nausea gets really bad. I end up drinking an Ensure because I can’t tolerate anything else
