It's definitely a good idea to seek professional help, which will usually refer you to a psychologist for assessment before they'll start treatment for gender related disorders anyway. It's highly recommended to have someone you can talk to openly about your experiences and, at least for me, having access to someone who's paid to actually listen to you when you speak alone has been highly therapeutic. I'm sure your mum just wants to make sure you get the help you need and don't rush into a life changing medical process. My mother had the exact same concerns when I first came out as trans. My Psychologist is helping me with my gender identity, my ADHD and my anxiety so I can get treatment and management strategies for all of them.

like the above said, hair, clothes, name and pronouns are all easy to change if things change later, but there's a reason other treatments often require therapy. it's not because trans people are mentally ill per se (though mental illness is common in trans people), but because discovering things about one's gender is never a smooth ride. my gender has changed so wildly over the years and i wish i knew back then that i could be respected and validated and pass as who i wanted to appear without having to go for expensive surgeries that i now regret. i'm sure her comment comes from a place of worry that you'll make decisions too rapidly and do irreversible things you'll end up regretting. but things like hair and clothes and asking friends/peers to use a different name and/or pronouns with you are a great first step into exploring how gender expression feels, so those should be just fine. best of luck.
That sucks!! I'm a trans adult and my mum was very concerned when I came out as trans at 14. She didn't want me making decisions I might regret as I moved the teen years - they're a very tumultous time and our feelings can change a lot! But things like cutting our hair, changing our clothes or name, those are all things that can be changed again if our feelings change. I see no reason why you shouldn't explore your gender in these ways, its harmless and gonna be a big confidence booster for you. And the likelihood is your transness will always be part of you, and you just get to start being your most authentic self sooner 💜

yikes, im sorry she reacted that way. i had a similar experience when i came out. I ended up going to see a gender therapist who helped me talk to my parents about it etc., but I was under 18 at the time. As an adult now I would probably not accommodate my parents' doubts nearly as much. You don't need a counselor to know what your internal feelings/thoughts are. Subconsciously your mom might be hoping a counselor would be able to reason with you/talk you out of it, and that A. won't happen and B. isn't really her concern anyway

It seems that the person's mother suggested talking to a counselor before proceeding with any further steps related to their transgender identity and cutting their hair.
