What can I expect to happen at my first rhumotology appointment? My first appointment is next week and kind of want to be aware of what it'll be like. I'm going for chronic pain and issues particularly around my joints but am very nervous as I've been shut down by doctors about it in the past. Any advice?

During your first rheumatology appointment, the doctor will likely move and test your joints. They may ask you to lay down on your back and then on your stomach, and move different parts of your body like legs, fingers, arms in various ways. They might even observe how you walk. It's important to communicate if anything hurts during this process. They will also take a complete and thorough history and perform a physical exam, which includes moving around your joints, poking areas and asking if it hurts. It's recommended to write down all the symptoms you have before your appointment to ensure you remember them all when you meet with the rheumatologist. If possible, avoid taking pain meds before your appointment as it can give the rheumatologist a better idea of your pain.
