is it normal to feel like you are physically in pain when you are feeling emotional pain? when i’m extremely upset (which is often and happens very easily) it feels like it’s physically hurting me and it feels like my heart is breaking over the smallest things.

According to a psychiatrist, brains of people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are wired to feel more pain or feel it more easily than others because the area of their brain that deals with emotions and physical pain is overactive. This could explain why negative emotions are being translated into physical aches. It's also noted that it's very normal for people with anxiety to experience physical pain and symptoms from it. Anxiety can make individuals tense up unknowingly and cause various physical discomforts.
