I feel so alienated while my family deals with grief. Why does it feel like I'm watching my emotions through a window?

It's a difficulty with emotional introspection and emotional processing that happens a lot with neurodivergent people. I frequently have that disconnect or feel that my emotions are too complex to understand or communicate, I usually just say they're abstract feelings when trying to describe that.

I totally get this. & def what Nexus said. I never realized it was “different” in a way that is often viewed as having no emotion over it until much later. I’ve found that the best thing to do during these times (for me, at least) is to reach out to the community for support with that feeling of alienation. There’s no right or wrong way to react to grief, whether it’s experiencing it strongly or having a detached feeling around it. You experience it in an individual way, just like everyone else does, even if that difference may feel—emotionally or otherwise—disconcerting.

@serendi Thank you for your advice. You're totally right, too.

I've had this my whole life, it's like I'm completely shut off from it all. I can't explain it - I definitely feel grief and I feel sad, but I can't connect with it

@Nexus This is exactly it, not being able to connect to how you feel but knowing it's there
