How long did it take to get an ADHD diagnosis?

I wasn't actually diagnosed with add until a few years ago. When I was a child my pediatrician prescribed me Concerta because in her expert opinion, I had add. Anyway, the process to find a psychologist who could diagnose me and take my insurance took longer than the diagnosis itself. The test was about 5 hours, broken up into a 2.5 hour session for two days. The first day tested for mental health issues, while the second day tested for learning disabilities.

It was pretty easy for me considering my parents and how all the rest of my siblings are aswell, but some people don't have as extensive history of mental disorders and I'm sure it's a lot harder for others to get diagnosed and helped.

I'm 38... I was just diagnosed a couple months ago. I had to have my pcp send a referral to a psychiatrist to be tested.

So i had a gap of 6-8 weeks between asking for an ADHD eval and getting medicated. My doctor office is one of those community health places so they have a behavioral health specialist who does ADHD testing, and the appointment was 3 weeks out. The interview and assessment test took about an hour or so, and by the end I was diagnosed. He sent a note to my PCP about recommending meds for me. Three weeks later, she was starting me on some sort of ADHD med. It was simple enough, honestly. It's different for everyone, though; some places evaluate you for more than just ADHD, which makes sense, and honestly, I'd've preferred that, I think. But remember that you can get a second opinion if you're sure you have ADHD and no one has a better explanation.

I got testing done after my parents asked and it took less than an hour and they just went yep he's got ADHD 100%. their first couple of tests were so conclusive I didn't have to do them all. the seriousness of ADHD can vary between different people. also because of yoyr age they can't legally deny you the testing you desire.
