I'm finally in a healthy relationship after all my past ones being toxic and abusive. my therapist said my flashbacks from past relationships while I'm with my current bf means I feel safe and vulnerable around him which is a good thing but it makes me have panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. how do I calm down from these flashbacks?

@pandasss sorry this has taken so long to get back to you- personally I actually use a technique that is inhale, hold, exhale, hold. For me I do 5s for each ‘section’ but really depends on one’s own preference, or whatever works for you best. If your thoughts are too loud I find it can really help, it won’t make them go away but can make them addressable. Sorry again for such a long time for relying.

That sounds tough. To calm down from the flashbacks themselves have you tried breathing exercises? I know it’s often the go to, and sometimes seems silly but it really can help calm the body down, and thus with a slower heart rate, a better opportunity to clear the head.

@Roarsy I've tried to focus on my breathing but the thoughts are too loud so I can't focus, do you know of any breathing techniques I can focus on that works best for you? I can try to write it out in front of me and just reread it as I practice to help imbed it in my memory. Thank you!!
