my psychiatrist just started me on lithium carbonate ER 300 mg for unipolar depression. the pharmacy recommended taking it at night since it can cause drowsiness, so I've been taking it before bed. since starting, I get drowsy, but my mind won't shut off. My heart feels like it's racing, my head is pounding (but that's not abnormal when I can't sleep), I have to get up to pee (abnormal for me), I can't get comfortable, and I end up tossing and turning all night long (abnormal). does anyone else experience this? is it even related? or a "fun" new quirk? does it go away? any tips or tricks? should I switch to taking it during the day? I am going to ask the psychiatrist about this, but I wanted to ask here first in case someone else has had to deal with this and may have some ideas.

One user shared their experience with lithium, stating that they had accidental lithium poisoning caused by processing it slower than most people. This led to sleep deprivation, hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and suicidal ideation. They advised paying attention to your lithium levels and not just leaving it to the professionals. Another user suggested checking your lithium levels to make sure they aren't too high and finding a new primary care provider if your current one isn't listening to your concerns. They also mentioned the possibility of tapering off the medication, but warned that this could be dangerous without a plan for dealing with returning depression symptoms.
