What coping strategies can I use to overcome the effects of triggering content? I don't purposely look for triggering content and when it comes to TV and movies, I always research what I'm going to watch first so that I don't run into anything that will seriously upset or disturb me, and there are some genres I just stay away from completely. This is more of an issue when I'm online. I know you can block certain keywords, block accounts that post triggering stuff, etc. but it doesn't completely get rid of everything out there. To me, running into news is the worst because depending on the story, it can impact several of my conditions at once (depression, insomnia, anxiety, panic, trauma, OCD). I won't give a super detailed example but one case that stuck with me was when a public figure ended up in the hospital and the news delayed on saying if they were alive or not, I heard the news at night and couldn't sleep knowing there would likely be an answer the next day and the outcome might be bad. This also happened with another public figure but their situation was more drawn out (months rather than overnight). I think this stems from having experienced this on a personal level (hearing news about a relative being sick at night and then waking up the next morning to them being dead... three times already). What's the best way to handle this specific issue? Thanks so much, having a super rough night and would appreciate any help you can offer.

my go to atm is Community. If you haven't seen it, it's so much more than you'd imagine. It's very clever and very funny. Also Disjointed (altho theres quite a sad ending to disjointed, but if ur like me you never watch a last episode). My go to was Big Bang Theory but I've watched that so much that I could narrate it in my sleep lol. Do you have any suggestions for me? I need some new safe stuff to watch.

I appreciate your answer so much, thank you! Yeah, I've gotten awful at handling highly emotional content and try to stick to light-hearted shows when possible. Your sitcom bank sounds like a great idea. If you have any favs, feel free to mention them. I'm always looking for good stuff to check out. ☺️

I'm not affected as much as you I don't think but I certainly stay well away from the news, sad songs, and highly emotional content. It's actually nice to hear this isn't just me lol. The only thing I find that helps after an accidental hit of bad stuff is watching something I know is safe and makes me laugh. I have a bank of sitcoms I've watched a thousand times which I know are safe and they kinda work as a comfort blanket for me. I know its kinda an obvious answer and soz I haven't got anything better but it works for me. Also I guess remembering that the bad stuff isn't particularly more prevalent in the world, it just gets talked about more and shouldst louder than all the good stuff and good people. The good is out there, it's just doing its thing more quietly. Lots of love xx

Some coping strategies to overcome the effects of triggering content include: 1) Limiting exposure to news and social media, especially before bedtime; 2) Creating a separate account on social media platforms for only positive content like cat videos, plants, recipes, etc.; 3) Practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques to help manage anxiety and panic when encountering triggering content; 4) Seeking support from friends, family, or a therapist to discuss your feelings and develop personalized coping strategies.
