How do I cope with feeling so horrible? I know I feel like this because of hormones, but it still feels so intense, I think this is the worst PMDD episode I've ever had. I feel so depressed, like there's just a pit in my chest. I've been clean from SH for a year, and I want to stay clean, but I'm scared I'm going to mess up. I know I'll feel better in a week, but in the meantime, how do I make riding out the storm easier?

all of these comments are right! be kind to yourself in these times. take care of your needs the best you can! I always motivate myself to shower and brush my teeth by putting on a comfort show to watch while I do so I’m not left alone in my head. I will be one year clean from SH in march and I understand the worry for relapse. using ice has been a good outlet for me. I like icing my face since it has skin benefits and lets me focus on a different physical sensation. when things were really bad I used a text hotline. I was able to use it discreetly and forced me to write down my feelings. it’s such a great resource when things feel scary! I’m here if you ever need to talk. pmdd is awful! just surviving is one of the toughest parts sometimes, so if you’re doing that you’re already doing amazing.

Have you tried the contraceptive pill YAZ? It fixed my pmdd although I skip the sugar pills and don't get a period at all. It doesn't work for everyone tho but its worth a shot

Fellow PMDDer here. One tip that had helped me on my worst days was remembering that something that is worth doing, is worth doing half way. Can’t take a shower? Wipe yourself down. Be kind to yourself during this time, it can be hell. Another tip is to set a reminder on your phone to eat and drink (preferably electrolyte enhanced like a mix of Gatorade and water), neglecting self care can further the emotional spiral even more. As someone who has been clean from self harm for a while, drawing lines in a notebook (preferably with a marker to not rip it) while pressing heavily into it really helped me deal with those urges. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, I highly encourage the suicide hotline. Depending on where you are in the world you may be able to even text them. Just remember that there is some truth to the old sayings we tell each other, that we do truly matter to the world, and you are no exception 🩵🖤. TL;DR: You are fighting a legitimate illness, take it one day at a time and do what you can to take care of yourself.

Some coping mechanisms suggested by individuals with PMDD include practicing yoga, drinking herbal teas such as hibiscus, raspberry leaf tea, chamomile and lavender, eating a lot of greens and protein, maintaining a clean environment, drinking cold water, wearing clean clothes, showering, going outside, talking to people, meditating, and reflecting on things you're grateful for. Other suggestions include doing breathing exercises like the Wim Hof guided breathing meditation available on YouTube, spending time in nature, and using creative outlets like music, coloring, and writing to work through feelings. It's also recommended to remind yourself that your feelings are temporary and due to hormones.
