I moved away from home for college to escape an abusive family. But shocker it wasn't a magic cure for my childhood trauma, and it's been hard switching between being happy i left and regretting it. I miss my cats, my friends, my home town. I hate where I live, but college is cheap. I just always feel like I'm doing things to escape rather than to be happy and idk if i know how to be happy or what iactually want to do with my life. I've made a good life for myself, have a loving boyfriend and a good friend. But i still feel like i did something wrong and I'm ruining my life

Thank you to both of you for commenting ❤️ to answer questions, I've been in therapy for roughly 5 years but only very recently found one i think can actually help me (fingers crossed right lol). And I don't want to take my cats cuz they're the only thing my mom has left really 😅 and she needs them more than i do. I tried adopting a cat with my boyfriend... But he lost it..then got another and lost that one too... So unfortunately the idea of owning any animal with him freaks me out now (we don't live together so i couldn't stop him from getting a second one and i can't have animals at my place) . But I'm talking with him about maybe getting like a fish or a lizard that's harder to lose and easier to take care of 😅 luckily my friend has a cat i can see when i need some good furry support though

@Hobgoblin Goldfish are great as long as you give them enough space and a good diet. They’re pretty hardy. Also bearded dragons are good entry level reptiles. I’m autistic and a bit of a reptile nerd lol
@rj.crow my brother had a bearded dragon and a gecko when we were growing up, I'm really gonna try push him on the lizard idea lol. Since you seen to know your stuff, do you think buying from petsmart or a similar store is a good idea or should i look for a breeder? I know petsmart has bad reviews on how they treat their animals so idk if i should buy from them

Can you get your cats? If not, are you in a position to adopt a kitty? If not that either - then how about volunteering at an animal shelter? Also, are you talking to a therapist? If you can find the right one - it really helps! Plus - we are here for you. You are strong, and amazing.
Wow. I’d swear I wrote this post. Honestly, I don’t really have an answer. If you can afford therapy, or even teletherapy (not through better help tho. they give out mental health info) I’d recommend that. If not, maybe try talking to the people who are in your life now. Childhood trauma is a lot to unpack and recover from, especially if you’re trying to do it on your own. Maybe of you talk through what you’re feeling and try to get to know yourself and what you really want and need out of life, that can set you in the right direction. I know this probably isn’t super helpful since I’m in the same boat, but you’re not alone in this.
