Does anyone else gotta constantly have some kind of media going just so they don't feel alone, or is that just me? Sometimes I'll even have the TV and media playing on my phone at the same time just because I don't want pure silence.

Sounds like either trauma or ADHD symptom. I have both and do this as well. Like if there's silence then you gotta actually face your emotions. Which is hard

Yup !!! I have to sleep with the TV on and sometimes I put relaxing sounds on my phone as well to fall asleep. And it sucks cuz my boyfriend works nights so I always have the TV on or my phone playing music I can not take pure silence!

Yes! This is me. I also rewatch programs that I feel comforted by if that makes sense.

@lillyput it does. I used to rewatch my favorite cartoons all the time. My mom use to tell me all the time wasn't I too old for them. But honestly cartoons used to be one of the only things that brought me comfort and eased my depression. I think because of the bright colors and kid like scenarios that just didn't have real world drama and hard life lessons in it. Now I've lost myself in watching my favorite YouTubers over. 😅

@italianxpeaches I'm glad its not just me🤣 I'm 43 and my depression was bad.I sat and watched Tom and Jerry. It just relaxed me!

would be better if I was medicated but currently Jobless/no health insurance and the state/fed run one is taking forever to process so im stuck with otc sedation (Benadryl, weed, alcohol, melatonin/valerian) which doesn't always work or in the special case of Benadryl and Melatonin if it doesn't knock me out I get some "fun" visuals in the corner of my eyes. I also have a hard time getting to sleep, and then sometimes over sleeping when I have my deep no dream sleeps

@InsidiousAnomaly oh goodness, I hope the insurance kicks in so you can see a proper doctor and they can help you out with that. I wish you the best in this journey and try not to go overboard mixing those otc meds. I don't want anything to happen to you.

I have to because the paranoia starts creeping if too quiet, and then start the indiscernible muffled whispering. Gotta have some noise when alone (animals help but not always

@InsidiousAnomaly oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. But it's a good thing you found something that does work for you. As long as it helps, that's what counts.

Same here! I've been trying to practice more and more on how to deal with silence but if my goals and plans work out I won't ever have to deal with silence unless I want it

Your not the only one. I can't have pure silence ever, it's rough sometimes but it's how I and some others function.

@JJ_lol it is rough but you manage how you can

oh my gosh. I never even realized I did this or why I did it until I read this. I do this all the time! It's like my ears constantly need to hear multiple sounds for my brain to be happy and stimulated, except for when I'm tired and want to sleep.

      • italianxpeaches

@dandelion_flower I just thought I was an odd one out so I figured I'd ask and see if anyone else felt the same. I'm glad I'm not alone in a way.

@dandelion_flower omg yes if I want to sleep? A fan running and NO MORE lol

@Blackolives8 I do suspect I have ADHD. I have a lot of the symptoms but everytime I mention it, the therapist and psychologist I see completely dismisses it. Especially my new therapist. She doesn't like "big name diagnosises" like that and has now labeled me chronically depressed and wants to fix that because all my problems will magically go away if she can just fix that part of me. 🥲 So it sucks. But I do have issues from my childhood and family as well. I was ignored alot as a kid and it just spiraled into being ignored by friends and now my partner. So the noise helps a lot to not feel things and in a sense feel like I have someone there.

I very often have the TV on and I'm doing something on my phone. If I'm playing a game I also have the TV going. My partner jokingly calls me an iPad kid lol

      • italianxpeaches

@Avery777 I'm the same way. There's been times I've had the TV going, additional YouTube on my computer and a game on my phone or Facebook reels on my phone. Rarely do I go to that extent but it does happen.

@italianxpeaches but she calls ME the iPad kid 😏

@italianxpeaches I have 100% done that. My partner and I both have adhd and instead of getting 1 good tv, we got 2 cheaper ones and put them next to each other in the living room lol she's gaming on her tv, I'm watching/playing stuff on mine. Both in and out of our phones.

🙏. Hi , no your not the only person who feels like that. I go to my phone to feel connected too. I also like quiet to think, but it can feel lonely there too. 🤗

      • italianxpeaches

@spiritkitty yeah definitely. I like quiet when it's time to go to sleep. It's the only time I want and need absolute silence. Some sounds I can't tolerate though. 😅
