does anyone else 'self-harm' not cut....but like dig nails into their own flesh, and not enough to bleed, just enough to stop from crying?

      @BraeburnGirl same! Only way I stop is by wearing acrylics or fakes.....only cause they taste and feel funny. My boyfriend constantly comments that I'm going to become nothing but a mouth if I don't stop.

      I do that a lot, especially while being in very stressful situations or while having flashbacks attacks. I also bite my lips a lot. šŸ˜“

      I definitely have the "digging your nails in" issue, which escalates to clawing if I'm particularly stressed. My psychiatrist thinks it's that my brain's not getting enough dopamine, so it seeks it through self harm. For me, wellbutrin helped a ton, since it makes my brain more sensitive to the dopamine I do have.

      Iā€™m a picker. I pick at hangnails until they bleed. I tear them off and my fingers are gross. Itā€™s something Iā€™ve done all my life. Youā€™re not alone.

      Yes. Seeing the first few layers of skin rip off airways gets me to stop. If I were to break skin it'd be in a spot easily noticeable to other people

        @Doost I do the same thing...mines always the back of my head or the back of my arms, I actually pull up skin though.

      I do both, and I can assure you that counts as self harm, you don't need the quotation marks

        @ickyichthyosaur I'm sorry to hear you do this too, but most people in my life belive self-harm only happens if you cut yourself and bleed so my idea of it is different.

          @Amanda1993 I'm sorry they're invalidating you

      I used to do it all the time as a kid, but every once in a while, when I wanted to stop myself from crying, I would dig my nails as deep as I could. It also happens when I'm mad and try to control my temper

        @senoratortuga omg same! I used to dig into my forehead while being picked on after sports. No one ever noticed or cared, now I have to also do it so I don't hit.

      Yep. Sometimes pain is the only thing that can pull me out of an episode. Never anything extreme. Just nails digging into skin, a pinch, or hair pulled.

        @FairyPrincesss I dig my nails into the back of my arms and head so no one can see. My boyfriend frequently has to pull my arms so I stop and then cleans it up. I don't bleed, but the pain stops the hurting in other ways.

      Yes! I pull out my hair and eyelashes, not enough that itā€™s obvious to others, but enough that I know that my actions are hurting me.

        @Walking_Library I pulled hair too, not sure I could do the eyelashes, but it makes you feel more calm somehow.

      Yes, I pinch the skin on my knuckles as hard as I can without breaking the skin if I'm in a situation where it would be inappropriate to act how I'm feeling.

        @Motley I used to actually chew on my knuckles until they bled and became calloused.
