I almost stormed out of a therapy session today. I have been in contact with the Disability Service at my university and I need evidence from both my GP and my current psychotherapist in order for my registration to be complete. Today, I asked in my session and was told quotes such as “you don’t need it, you want it” and “you feel entitled to it”. They then went on to therapise my need for a letter as my experience with withholding parents. I NEED a letter in order to receive provisions from my university, I do not WANT to be in a position where I have to resit a year again as I was suicidal. I broke down and cried for 10 minutes after hearing they essentially wouldn’t cooperate and I don’t know what to do. I feel the relationship with my therapist has become tainted and I am not getting the right support. I have had this therapy for well over a year and a half now, however if I leave I will be on a waiting list again for ages. I don’t know what to do. My instinct is now to be angsty and self-sabotaging during sessions. I know I have to go against this as it will do more harm than good, but I don’t know how to continue my sessions with any real belief.

I feel like surely it's ableist to have to out your private medical information to get accessibility, but you’re definitely valid in your feelings here - jumping through all the hoops is hard

I just walked out of a doctors appointment because she said I was “silly” for having SI

BetterHelp do great therapy just in case you need it

Agreed with above, this is full on medical gaslighting, and by failing to provide you with something you need in order for provisions to be made for you, they're preventing you from living your life to its full potential and reducing your quality of life. Their negligence could put your life at risk in this case. I would definitely try and find a way to speak to their superior, and explain your previous circumstances, what you need from them, and what it's for. It's not like you're asking for a sick note to sign you off, which is equally valid of course, but you're asking for a letter that explains your needs so provisions can be made for you to study, improve yourself and work towards a career. That should never be withheld, and any mental health professional worth their salt should know and understand that. Sending positive thoughts and energy to fight this ❤️

@crafty_spoony thank you so much 💕 I’m not giving up on this. I’m going to give my heart and soul to making sure my needs are treated with care and respect. I just can’t believe I was dismissed this easily and there was not even a justification.

that therapist is awful, they were just straight up gaslighting you about your disability and experiences. they're withholding care from you and that's really disgusting of them. i'm sorry you have to deal with this :( when doctors withhold treatment, you can tell them to write on your chart that they are refusing to give you whatever tests/imaging/etc. that you need. they will then usually opt for getting you the treatment instead of making themself look bad to everyone else that ever looks at your chart. i'm not sure if it's the same with therapists, but it might be worth a try. or maybe they have a supervisor you can report them to?

@avian I think I’m going to go in with a clear head at my next session and try one last time so I can take more evidence that care is being withheld and then write up a report. My issue is well is that I’m usually in group therapy so 5 patients and 2 therapists. This time it was just me and the two therapists and it honestly felt like I was being ganged up on which was horrific.

@meggiedamoo oh that's terrifying :( i hope you don't have to deal with that again. but i wish you the best on filing a report!! if any of the other patients have had problems with these therapists, that would be good to note too
