I’m having a very hard time with personal hygiene. I shower 3 times a month at least. I hate being wet as well. I haven’t swam in years despite belonging to a beach club. How do I make myself want to shower more?

You’re absolutely not alone. All kinds of people have all kinds of relationships with the experience of washing. I take baths in the dark with the shower curtain closed, and sometimes, I can’t convince myself to get my hair wet or pick up the soap. Having a bathrobe nearby can help make the transition in and out of the shower fell less naked, wet, or uncomfortable. Oh! I have waterproof speakers, too, because a distraction keeps me moving on autopilot, so I’m less likely to nope outta there.

Shower wipes, brushing teeth, and dry shampoo are genuinely a lifesaver

I CAN RELATE I SHOWER 🚿 MAYBE 4x A MONTH. BECAUSE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY 😥 AND BAD MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES I DEAL WITH DAILY AND MOST DAYS I DON’T THINK 💭 OR WANT TO GET OUT OF MY BED. 😔

I agree with PugsSlugsSnails thing, showering was WAY easier for me when I started just turning on the shower and let it warm up before I even took off my clothes. It's a much better transition.

Find nice smelling products, use wet wipes when you can't get yourself to shower, try calming lighting (maybe color changing leds), listen to music or if in the bath you can watch your favorite show

I suffer from this issue thanks to a ex friend telling me that her daughter passed out taking a shower because it dropped her BP to low although she was on the psych unit and having other problems but with me having High blood pressure, low pulse, leg issues, lumber disc disorder it's not helping but the thought of getting in the shower sends me to instant anxiety or panic mode. I try to use wipes occasionally but I'm at the point I just feel like why care about showering I don't leave the house, no one comes over, etc. I used to pretty much live in the shower years ago at least 2 showers a day, used to swim all day weather permitting, and now I'm fearing something will happen if I do shower.😔 Anyone else fearing something happening if you do shower? Sorry for adding a question to yours I'm new here and not sure what's allowed.

the advice here is really great, and it might also help if you set aside a few hours and make it a ~self care event~ that you can prepare for and be excited about. you could get some nice new products, a fluffy towel, and set aside time after your shower to light some candles and watch a favorite show while you dry off

i go through this sometimes and when i wanna shower without actually showering i use baby wipes! they make you feel clean without getting wet. one way to motivate yourself is to blast music while showering. i like to sing along to my songs while i’m washing myself. maybe treat yourself after every time you shower so you have something to look forward to! sometimes i like to order food before i take a shower so once i’m done showering the food is here!

Ease the transitions. Sometimes I run the shower on hot to steam up the bathroom so it isn’t a cold jump into nudity and then into the shower but instead you’re steamy as you undress and boom you’re already part way there. Also you’re allowed to sit down. You’re allowed to use one soap for all of it and then rinse and be done.

I also have this issue. With the added anxiety of dirtying more clothes and towels and then having to do laundry. Because it's a shared laundry room, that happens to lock automatically at curfew.

Do you like baths? Also maybe you could get a body wash that you like the smell of? I love St Ives Pink Lemon and Mandarin orange because it lasts a really long time, you don't need to use much. and I LOVE the way it smells. Also maybe if you get a nice new towel that will help you dry off nicely? I always use two towels, one for my hair and one for my body. Also, I used to put my towels in the dryer to warm them up for when I got out and it feels so nice. Oh ALSO I have a robe that is the same material as a towel and it will dry you off very quick right when you put it on! And you could put it in the dryer too, to make it warm. Also do you have a deodorant you like? Smells are underrated because we can't see them but they can make a big difference in our mood.

Not sure how to make yourself want to shower, but in the meantime have you tried wipes instead of showering? They can be a lifesaver when you don't have the motivation to actually shower.
