Did anyone else find it extremely difficult to get diagnosed with borderline personality disorder? It took me several years to get diagnosed and I had to fight for it really hard :/ In the past I was told by some medical professionals that even though I met the criteria, they didn’t want to diagnose me because of the stigma. Did anyone else have that issue?
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
It really depends on your doctor I had the same issue but luckily I got diagnosed at a young age
Yeah I'd been trying to get a diagnosis since middle school, I told my school counselor that I was having paranoid thoughts and she said only people with schizophrenia get those🤦♂️ finally got one when I turned 18.
I had the opposite experience…because my sister was diagnosed with BPD as a teenager, I refused to let it sink in for months when my team diagnosed me. Now that I’ve accepted it and am working through to correct the symptoms, it’s easier.
I was diagnosed after a year of trying but now I'm worried I was misdiagnosed and I have ocd. This is because my symptoms got tons better after medication. However I know they can be comorbid with each other so I'm not sure, but I don't want to go back because my therapist managed to forget me when I didn't go for like 3 months (I'd had her for a year) and she deleted all of my info, including my diagnoses, and seeing that it took a year for her to diagnose me with bpd the first time I just never went back
She had also kept telling me I couldn't have bpd because "nobody with bpd would want help" and she said she'd drop me if I did have it. She was sending me to cbt before I didn't go for three months and then wouldn't send me there when I came back cus again, she forgot I had BPD. She was a child therapist and I was 19 so there was no reason she shouldn't send me anywhere else anyway
I had symptoms since middle school but no one really noticed until after high school when I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 (I suspect it’s a misdiagnosis as I haven’t improved much with meds despite trying several) I was later diagnosed with BPD not long after my bipolar diagnosis as when my therapist looked at doctors notes from my most recent hospitalization at the time, they noted some cluster B traits, specifically those of BPD. My therapist went over the symptoms with me to see what I’d experienced and we’d determined that yeah that sounded kinda like me. I still feel like I’m chiefly treated for Bipolar 1 though which seems ineffective. The clinic I’ve temporarily transferred to for DBT I didn’t even see where they noted BPD in visit summaries. It feels like I’m slowly tearing myself apart and I can’t get jack sh!t in terms of proper help.
