Hi everyone! So I’m in my early 20s with fibromyalgia and one of the worst parts in my opinion is when I have to call in to work because of a flare up. My flare ups usually involve having brain zaps similar to when you discontinue an SSRI. Does anyone else have any advice on how to feel less guilty when having to call in or have brain zaps as well? Thanks!

I think sometimes it's hard to struggle with the guilt we may have due to our illnesses because perhaps other people don't call out as often. Something that has helped me is I remind myself that I'm not a burden, and I am doing this for my self care. With work being pushed as being equal to self worth, it's important to remember that we are not what we produce and that we are inherently self-worthy of care and respect. Take a couple of deep breaths and try to remind yourself of this often--and there are understanding bosses that are out there, so don't be afraid to advocate what you need or find something with better accommodations. Hope this helps, all the love

I used to feel guilty when I called in for a flare up but you have to take care of you. This disease is insidious in a million ways, not the least of which is the way it can make you feel like you are a burden to others. I saw a meme that hit it on the head. "Never get a chronic illness. It is really inconvenient for others." Take care of yourself and know that you are worth it!
