Advice on opening up in therapy? My mom’s a therapist, so I think this has a lot to do with it, but I have a really hard time feeling safe in my sessions. I’ve been to about 5 therapists so far, one for a year, and I still really haven’t had a productive session yet. Idk if I just can’t be honest with myself and my emotions, might as well sit with them, or if it’s a trust thing. It certainly didn’t help that my last therapist had an Alexa in her room. Idk, I don’t like the idea of my phone, or laptops or anything being where I am. Ads show up when I talk about certain things and although I know I’m one of billions, and it’s not gonna be seen or considered, it still creeps me out. Ugh, therapy is about processing. Why can’t I just do that?

The only advice I can really give is, whether your mom is your therapist, or not, tell her ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that goes on in your head and in your life. That’s the best way for a therapist to help you solve, or at least manage, the problems that you have. If your therapist knows EXACTLY what is going on, they’ll be able to help and understand what is happening in the best way possible. Even if what you try to explain doesn’t come out the way you intended it to, I’m sure your therapist will understand where you’re coming from.

@KatGPT idk. Sometimes the response I get from these therapists is always like, “why don’t you just stop doing the thing?” And “you gotta express something real with me”, when I’m already trying my best. I feel…like I’m responsible for their response if that makes sense, and idk what to do. My mom isn’t my therapist, but she tries therapizing me all of the time, which is what I meant. It makes therapy hard because I associate it with mistrust.

One suggestion for opening up in therapy is to start gradually and build trust in the relationship. This approach can help protect you from getting hurt, but it may make the process slower and longer. It's important to go at your own pace and trust your gut. If a therapist doesn't feel safe, it's okay to look for another one. Remember to be gentle with yourself throughout the process.
