I have fought anxiety all of my life, and it seems to be getting worse as I get older. How does one find a reliable therapist?

I would have a checklist of qualities you might want in your therapist and give them a trial period of about 2-3 sessions before deciding if you need to switch and find a new one. If things are going well, you like them, you are learning things about yourself and you’re feeling better after your sessions, not worse, I would say you’re with the right one for the moment. Once you no longer feel you’re benefitting from them then I would look into new options. I tend to search for therapists on Psychology Today and read through their About section to get a feel for what type of person they are. Depending on your issue your doctors or other local organizations might be able to find someone that could help. I had a local organization that helps with domestic violence find me one of my therapists who I enjoyed for a while. It can be an exhausting process trying to search through everything!

If you call your insurance provider they should have a list of places/people they cover for therapy. Looking up wellness centers or rehabs near you and asking for recommendations or consultations should also get you a good list! If you have a doctor appointment coming up you can ask your doctor if they can get you a recommendation to see a psychiatrist, though psychiatrists are trained medical doctors, they can prescribe you medications if that's a rout you want to take, and they spend much of their time with patients on medication management as way of treatment. Psychologists focus extensively on psychotherapy and treating emotional and mental stuff for you with behavioral intervention. Sorry for the info-dump I just started listing things that helped me figure out what I want to do :) good luck with this!! <3
