Some cheap things you can buy at the store & online which are safe to take long-term every night and are effective in treating insomnia: valerian root, lemon balm, L-tryptophan, L-theanine, chelated magnesium, melatonin, ashwagandha (sensoril extract). It’s safe to combine any or all of these, but if you’re gonna go with just one - I used to give my girlfriend with insomnia valerian root if she was having trouble sleeping and just one small capsule had her snoring. Doxylamine (usually the ingredient in Unisom) did the same but it’s best not to take that daily long-term. Square breathing (look it up) while in bed also helps, by relaxing you and distracting you from thoughts
@Xovil I should add that L-tryptophan might not be a good idea because it can trigger mania. Definitely don’t take it if you’re already on antidepressants cause it can cause serotonin syndrome. All the other ones I listed are safe with antidepressants and bipolar.
For months I struggled with very little sleep I was constantly having manic episodes so I would get 3 hours of sleep average for a month maybe 6 if I was lucky. Only thing that has helped me is weed and my anti psychotic medicine

Don’t forget to soak in warm water. I always brushed off the advice to take a warm shower before bed, but for me like soaking does the trick, I have pain that is mostly manageable so I like to take salt baths as often as I get worn out, but I didn’t realize this thing made me sleepy until I rented a place that had access to a hot tub. Warm soaks 20 mins or longer changing into fresh pjs does the trick for me. I only live there a few months but idk I highly recommend a hot tub for insomnia and salt baths if you can’t go out and get a hot tub, a lot of times motels with pools let you use the hot tub without renting a room if you pay the front desk a fee

My love, please watch ASMR, go on YouTube and research Gibi Asmr and Heather Feather. You won’t regret it. I promise

@CrustieKrab Agreed. Those are two of my favorites. I wish Heather would come back 😭

I like having a sensory signal to my body to start winding down. One that I really enjoy is that I turn off all lights at the same time each night and use candles to accompany my bedtime routine!

I also live with a seizures disorder
This is not a long term solution and is. Probably not that safe or amazing but sometimes when I'm really struggling with insomnia and am super exhausted but can't sleep I take original Dramamine before bed. Good for short term but I have read that bodies build up a tolerance so it shouldn't be taken too often.
Be careful with trazadone.
@keekso234 did you have issues with it? I've been on it for 7 years without problems.
@aevyn well, at first it worked great _then I started having seizures and panic attacks. I haven't really had a great time with meds so that subject is sore I try not to be to judge mental about medications but I'm like against them because of my experience but I know they work for people just not for me
I used to struggle horribly with insomnia, but I take Trazodone and Melatonin now, and it's great. I fall asleep easily, sleep through the night, and have no trouble getting up in the morning.

My boyfriend struggles with insomnia, what usually helps him is a lot of activity during the day and melatonin at night because that helps us keep sleep
