I was discovered to be autistic later in life, and I feel like I mask way more than ever before, yet my mask-sona is still me? Does anyone else feel this way?
Yeah i just discovered i am too! Masking for me is so automatic when I’m in public, i used to think it was me but i realized it’s not later. I also have bipolar 1, and my biggest fear is having a mixed episode in public, which has landed me in both jail and the mental hospital multiple times.
yes, masking is very hard to unlearn. in some cases, you may still need to mask a bit for personal safety. that really depends on your environment. it’s like a trauma response, which is why it’s so difficult to unmask. friends and family also may have to adjust to how you are when you’re not masking. try not to keep masking around them for their comfort, they *should be* accepting of you. I myself still struggle a lot with this, good luck 💜
