I had a psychiatrist tell me that I must not have autism because I was being social and talking with her. I hate that it took me over a year to get a psychiatrist and this is what I get.

One doctor kept referring to a psychiatrist who wrote a report on me while I was heavily masking and intoxicated as a reason to why I didn't have autism. For obvious reasons that doctor is no longer my doctor and I have made a complaint about him. He also kept saying that I was temporarily and permanently disabled which makes no sense

Autism is a broad range or spectrum(hence why it’s called Autism Spectrum Disorder[ASD]). There are people with autism that are “higher functioning” and those where it’s more pronounced. I made it almost 30 years before I got evaluated for memory stuff and the dr told me “your memory is working fine, you’re autistic” and I was like “ohh that makes a lot of sense actually.” Some of us mask better than others so we get overlooked because our autism isn’t “as severe”as others(read that as “not as noticeable”). My parents were shocked when I told them and gave all the excuses under the sun as to how it wasn’t obvious when I was a child. I’d say reach out to a therapist/psychologist and not just a GP as they’re better equipped to give a diagnosis and usually a lot nicer.
