Signs & symptoms

Migraine aura symptoms include temporary visual or other disturbances that usually strike within an hour before other migraine symptoms such as headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Other disturbances which associated with migraine aura include numbness, speech and language difficulty, and muscle weakness.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of migraine with aura is made first with your doctor asking you about your symptoms, medical history and family history. Migraine can be diagnosed without further tests, but your doctor may prefer to rule out any serious medical condition such as brain tumor. Based on your symptoms he or she may suggest on or more of the following tests: CT scan which can produce detailed images of your brain, MRI can show a more detailed image of your brain and your spinal cord.

Treatment

Treatment for migraine with aura aims at alleviating pain and reducing the frequency of flares. Medications used to relieve migraine pain include over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin or Advil. Medications combining caffeine, acetaminophen and aspirin may be helpful against mild migraine. Triptans can relieve many symptoms of migraine, but they may not be safe for people at risk of a stroke or heart attack.
