Why have my sensory issues gotten so much worse? When i was younger i had them a little bit but they were barely noticeable most of the time. Recently they have just been getting worse and worse and i have a need to control everything in my environment so that i feel better even though i used to never have to do that in the exact same scenarios. I constantly keep getting this hot feeling and flushes which prevent me from sleeping. I have a feeling its made worse by my medication (atomoxetine) but it has still been worse generally while off it. Its become very debilitating and often times there is nothing i can do to escape sensory overload/meltdowns which i have literally never experienced till this year and now i’m having them multiple times a week. I have had a fairly recent blood test which ruled out most physical/medical things but i am having another soon. I can only really conclude its caused by increased stress/anxiety but theres nothing i can do about that because i’m too anxious to do what i need to do to seek help for that and i just can’t seem to properly express to people how bad my state is everyone just sees me as fine. I just feel completely hopeles.

In my personal experience. Things became strange/worse/different due to me allowing myself to just be autistic literally. And allowing myself to have my limits. and also researching exactly whats common stressors for autistics and such. If you’ve ruled out medial/physical causes then i guess it could be you are just experiencing different things/feelings/situations and they’re so different/big that simple things before arent so simple anymore and its stressful. For me, if my routine for a day is suddenly change or of something is just different I have to process it thoroughly and doing that means my energy is focused on processing NOT wanting to talk much NOT wanting to see the bright day outside NOT wanting to wear certain clothes NOT wanting to eat certain foods NOT etc. so that my body and mind and soul can just focus on the change and process. but then of course if i dont just focus on making sure i only eat my safe foods/stay out of sunlight/talk minimally/ i willl get overwhelmed. (this can happen subconsciously too sometimes we dont know what really is going on mentally/physically untill we just figure it out ourselves)

Lifestyle changes and stress can severely impact Autism. It's for the same reason that people think you can grow out of it, for some learning enough coping skills and arranging their life to accommodate their needs, either through therapeutic intervention or by developing more and naturally navigating their issues, is enough to make many of the symptoms of autism subside for the most part. When it goes in the other direction, childhood autism worsening instead of getting better/remaining the same or autism symptoms appearing clearly in someone who previously hadn't noticed them, it generally means that the changes made between childhood and where the person is developmentally when the symptoms began worsening is less accommodating to the autistic individual's needs and may have added more stressors that make coping harder. Medication most definitely can be a factor in this but if it isn't the only factor looking for other changes that you can fix is just as important as tweaking your medication. Feeling out of control can most definitely also be one of those stressors, trying to gain more control where you can may help, like planning out a schedule that allows you to see and control your day and giving yourself breaks were you can stim/otherwise destress. Also stricter boundaries with those around you may help if that is an area you struggle with. On top of that using more accommodations than you used to use like headphones, stims/ stimtoys, or strategic clothing used as a barrier for skin contact may be helpful even if you only need it for a brief time while you arrange everything to be less stressful. I'm glad you're also working on ruling out physical conditions, your brain and body are connected so it is important to look at both sides so you don't miss anything important. I hope things start getting easier for you.

@StrawberryMilk This very much fits my experience too. Allowing myself to be authentic has brought needing to do this and find ways to manage it all best.

You are not alone. It wasn’t all of the sudden for me, BUT things seem to be exponentially getting worse. Message me if you need to chat

I've had something similar happen. I have an injury that causes me chronic pain and as I've gotten older the pain has increased steadily. I've noticed that as the pain increases I become more sensitive to everything.

@Somberose That never even occurred to me before you mentioned it, but I think perhaps I've had a similar experience to an extent.

I don't think hyperthyroidism would necessarily be easy to diagnose with blood tests alone. Is your thyroid gland swollen? Could it be undiagnosed Graves Disease, or perhaps a symptom of complex ptsd combined with the autism? I'm just spitballing here

@Walk_Partners it most definitely is diagnosed solely with blood tests - specifically tsh levels

@Walk_Partners it's most likely the stress and the fact that sensory issues change during puberty

It's possible that your sensory issues have worsened due to increased stress and anxiety, as you mentioned. Additionally, medication side effects could be contributing to the problem. It's important to discuss these concerns with a healthcare professional who can help determine the cause and provide appropriate support or treatment options.
