I have been "free" of my abuser for 16 years but I still have this recurring dream. I am going to get away from him. I wasn't the one who raised my hand in anger. I wasn't the one who was controlling or abusive. why do I get to keep feeling like it never ends. looking for support and understanding.

I have the same issue but not dreams, just a lot of triggers. I’ve been away from one physical abuser for about 5 years and one emotionally abusive person since December. And then another emotionally and physically abuser I still have contact with. She is a great person sometimes and terrible other times. I’ve slowly been creating hard boundaries and sticking to them, but it isn’t easy.

@Music_Bird One abuser is my dad. The second is my ex boyfriend (both dad and ex were alcoholics) and the last is my mom. It’s tough. I’m close to extended family, so I have to deal with my parents at reunions and get togethers. It’s not ideal. I might start skipping reunions for my mental health.

i understand what you’re feeling like i’ve only been away for about a year but my therapist shared with me that as the decades go on it gets a bit easier it’s easier for me to cherish small moments and be distracted with busy activities like showering and going on a walk when i’m consumed with the hopelessness

It's common for survivors of abuse to experience recurring dreams or nightmares related to their trauma. These dreams can be a manifestation of your subconscious and may indicate unresolved feelings or stress related to the abuse. Seeking support from friends, family, or a mental health professional can help you process these emotions and find understanding.
