My doctor recently ordered more specific blood work to get an idea of what might be causing my ME symptoms. She looked at my levels of methylmalonic acid, B12, folic acid, and homocysteine -- all healthy. She also ran an EBV immunoglobulin panel, and that identified the problem: my IgG antibody levels are through the roof (20-30x the normal, healthy level). No wonder I've been so sick. So, friends with ME, talk to your doctors about ordering these tests if they haven't already. My doctor said that she'll treat me with an antiviral if this test came back positive, so I have hope for the first time in almost 2 years of starting to feel better. It can't cure me, but it can increase my quality of life, and that matters. Note: I was never diagnosed with mononucleosis (which is caused by EBV), and my illness didn't start until my test-confirmed COVID infection two years ago. My doctor explained that it's possible that COVID weakened my immune system and broke through the blood-brain barrier, which "woke up" a dormant EBV infection and caused ME. People can become infected with EBV and not have any symptoms, especially younger kids and adults, and that may have been my case. Just wanted to pass along this info to those who might benefit from it!
