Serum iron isn't a great indicator for overall iron levels, so most doctors look at it alongside the other values in your iron studies, like TIBC, iron saturation, and ferritin. Ferritin shows the levels of iron stores in your body. What your doctor does will rely on your specific condition. With my most recent IDA relapse, my serum iron was normal, but my ferritin was <8 and my TIBC was high, so my hematologist sent me in for iron infusions over the next two weeks.
