Perhaps he doesn’t know how to help you, so he defaults to avoiding the topic. I know when I get overwhelmed, I feel myself get annoyed when my friends or other people tell me about their problems (then feel bad for being annoyed), so it’s possible he does care, he just doesn’t know how to express it. Either way I think you should talk to a relationship therapist if you can, or if not, someone you trust to be objective about the situation.
