I went to my doctor the other day and for the first time EVER, a doctor's assistant verbally asked me the PHQ-9 questions out loud. That felt so embarrassing because I always score between 10-15 and my medical history shows it. I've never had to tell someone my answers directly and I hated every moment of it. I don't believe depression should be scaled on that "baseline" test. my depression is a lot worse than what the PHQ-9 assumes. I wish it wasn't the standard go-to test. I also hate that she made me verbally answer it when I literally could've done it on the laptop she did it on. It's something deeply personal that I shouldn't have to talk about around a primary care assistant nurse.

I'm so sorry, that's really uncomfortable and I'm surprised because usually that's done on a device or paper. You should definitely consider saying something. Maybe in an email so you don't have to speak about it? If not for you, maybe for the next patient so they don't have to go through that

This happens to me almost every check up with the assistant. And I agree it always feels terrible when I have to verablly answer them. Especially when it's all pretty clear in my chart, medications and all. I wish they would take into consideration how traumatizing this can be for some. To top it off I have the worst social anxiety so speaking up about it is troublesome as it is.

I get that. If you’re up to it, maybe next time try telling them you would rather only speak with the doctor about it or fill it out yourself. If they won’t let you, then try to find a new doctor if you can.
