Hi! Is there a "right" way to act while having a panic or anxiety attack? Because I don't stay still or quiet while having one plus sometimes I can even function all while in the back of my mind my thoughts are racing, I'm anxious & on alert. other times, I can't move and I pick at my clothes. my relative believes I couldn't have had a panic attack that they caused because I was able to "text and say please don't knock on my door unannounced, I'm getting in the shower. can you come back another time." apparently since I knew I was panicking I'm wrong. yet they don't understand mental health or believe in it and are telling me how I should have been during my panic attack. help make it make sense.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to your actions during an anxiety attack. The severity of the attack will cause different reactions. I can be mid attack and look completely calm but my head is screaming. N other times I'm walking in circles n mumbling to my self n breathing heavy. As far as the family thing. Those who don't experience this disorder will never fully understand what we go through. If trying to educate them on it doesn't work then all we can do is remind ourselves that we are ok and doing the best we can and there opinion or thoughts on the matter mean very little compared to what u feel in that moment and how u choose to manage your anxiety. You got this hun!

I run around the house like a crazy person when I'm in panic attack. Then I'll usually go outside (it's cold here now) to shock my body and think of something else. I always try and pep talk myself too. Then I take my vitals a million times to assure myself I am not dying. My boyfriend doesnt understand and usually makes it worse for me. There's no right or wrong way to panic.

@kboyer00 I'm so sorry, yours sound so bad. I got lucky that my fiancé understands and tries to help. But sometimes it doesn't. My grandmother is the nonbeliever yet tried to tell me I didn't have one because I texted her while panicking... I was on a phone call with my fiancé (we were dating at the time) and he could even tell. 😮‍💨 I hope yours understands one day. ❤️

@Everyone thank you, thank you so much. I needed this. I've been googling like crazy but I really needed to hear it from others who have experienced it. I hope y'all's aren't too bad all the time and someone is there for y'all. 😊

Just because those around you don’t understand, doesn’t mean you’re wrong

Everyone deals with emotions differently especially when it comes to a panic attack. Panic attack can make u feel a variety of things from thinking u were dying to being hyper alert. I’m sorry u are going through this and that your relatives are not being helpful with your situation. Everything takes time but time will pass and u will learn how to deal with them and grow!

There is no right way to have a panic attack. Sometimes I will be to the point I can't move and have to just curl up into a ball. Other times I have to get up and pace. It looks different for everyone.

@chelsy very nicely said. Those that don’t experience or trained on it don’t understand what we go through. I experienced it with my husband and even though he was trying to help, his words seemed cold and wasn’t helpful at the time. Now I meditate, go for walks or take showers to clear my mind. We can do hard things and surely you’ve got this @authorgirl

@Under_Water_Weaver Thank you. Years of dealing with anxiety and family that don't understand or didn't want to understand. My biggest pet peeve is someone telling you well just don't panic or just calm down. Well I would ifni could.
