Ok, Guys and gals. Can anyone answer why bupropion is extremely stimulating for some and not others? I suffer from ADHD and have been on a very low dose (75mg IR) that I’m taking in the mornings. Usually I suffer from somnolence throughout the day, but the Wellbutrin has done the exact opposite. I’m tweaked throughout the day and have horrible insomnia at night.

JoAnn - literally the same on both ends of the spectrum for me. So you get overstimulated from it as well! Interesting

I take the 12-hr release bupropion (100mg) and I’ve been having trouble sleeping too, but I prefer this to zonking out at my desk at work lol

Not sure. If I had to guess, something's up with your melatonin production - have you tried taking a melatonin gummy before bed?

Interesting explanation. I wake up exhausted, go to sleep exhausted. What I did notice with the Wellbutrin is, even though I feel like I’ve got insomnia, I wake up “awake” if that makes sense. I just can’t believe this is on a 75mg IR and nothing more. Do you think this is indicative of just how “out of whack” my chemistry was, and that the change is a major shock? Or am I just hypersensitive/poor metabolizer?

Wellbutrin/bupropion is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, meaning it keeps dopamine which is already in your system and keeps it around longer. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter responsible for, among other things, energy levels and wakefulness (note that melatonin is separately responsible for sleepiness, which means that wakefulness and sleepiness are not necessarily separate functions). Wellbutrin WILL cause you to be more alert than normal, and can interfere with sleep if you have an otherwise normal sleep schedule.
