so i have kind of a scary question. earlier i was having a weird episode of crying and being rlly upset (not sure why) but i dug my nails into my skin rlly hard it left marks and scratches. i didn’t really mean to but it also wasn’t rlly subconsciously? i’ve done this one other time years ago and made myself bleed but this time i didn’t. idk it was super weird. just wondering if this would be considered a form or self harm and who i should bring this up to? i’m planning on telling my therapist but i’m nervous.

Pain can be an easier way of releasing excess energy and tension, so the brain uses it as a shortcut when it doesn't know what to do with a flood of stimulation from anxiety etc. Fortunately, you can get a similar effect through punching a soft surface, screaming, exercising really hard, thrashing around, and otherwise releasing the energy so that your brain doesn't turn that energy inward and cause you pain.

Doing it intentionally would be considered self-harm. You're making the right decision in telling your therapist. They can help.

That's happened to me as well when I was in high school it mainly happened when I was super anxious but I didn't know until it started hurting that's when I stopped ☺️ that is why I like wearing long sleeves so I hold the end of the long sleeves to keep me from doing that ☺️

It's ok that that happened. It might not be the healthiest approach to coping, but you're ok. You didn't do anything wrong. I would definitely bring it up with your therapist, they're the ones who have the best knowledge to help you<33

First I want you to know that it’s not your fault that you did that. And yes I think that it’s a form of self harm, I think it needs attention, since you have a feeling about it. Personally I haven’t done that before, but to me it seems like it’s a form of self harm (but very subtle). Do you have a therapist , doctor, a trusted friend to talk to?

I don’t have experience with self harm but I really hope you feel better soon and can get your question answered! Sending love
