I struggle with trying at anything because I’m so scared of failing. For example, I just bought a brand new sketchbook but I can’t bring myself to use it because I know I’m not good at drawing and I don’t want to mess it up. Anyone else have this problem? Tips?

Failure is not trying. At least if you try there is a chance of success.

You don't necessarily have to be a "good" artist to enjoy drawing. Mostly everyone has drawn little stickfigures at one point and thought "Wow, this is awesome!" Your art skill is always growing and expanding, so don't let high expectations get the best of you. Best regards on your journey.

The advice I was given is that you can't fail at something if you don't give yourself set expectations. 😄 Art can be anything and everything! It doesn't need to look any specific way to be art, so why hold yourself to some imaginary standard for what would be "good"? The reality is that if you open the sketchbook and doodle something random, that's a perfect use of the book. You literally can't mess it up if you view the sketchbook as a creative space just for you!

I can't think of any tips for the feeling, but I can say this. You can't "fail" at something like art. You can fail math tests, but that's fine. You can't be perfect at everything. You may have trouble in some areas but be amazing in other areas. Improvement is good, but mainly focus on what you can do more than what you can't do. Also, when you're just starting out at something, you're definitely not gonna be perfect. You can't be an expert at something you're just starting, you don't have those abilities yet, but you can get there if you start. I think my old art is bad, but 10 year old me was proud and a lot of people loved my art. And right now, I have a lot of the skills I've always wanted, because I've always loved art the most so I kept doing it. There were times when I was unhappy with it, but that doesn't mean I failed. It doesn't even mean it was bad. So whatever you wanna do, do it <33 And if there's stuff you aren't capable of doing, you don't need to be able to do it to be "good enough".
My best tip is use material that's erasable or acrylic paint because of you mess up it's okay you can just cover it up or erase! Also thing that helped me the most is knowing messing up does not equal failing. Mess ups are apart of art and life in general. It's okay to mess up and try again or analysis the issue and try new approach. Sometimes I also make something new from the mess. It's hard to get into that mindset but it definately helps destress.
I feel the same way!!! :/ ❤️
If I'm scared of messing up on art I remind myself that art can look like any thing then I scribble and darken the lines that look like something and paint it or color it. 💖
I have the same problem, back in middle school I wanted to play soccer all the time and I was so excited for the tryouts, unfortunately, those thoughts got a hold of me and I ended up no going to try outs, it's something I regret a lot. I encourage you to not be scared of failure, since everybody starts somewhere, I know you can watch some tutorials online and get better with time and effort, you've got this, don't do the same mistakes I did 🙏💕
