(I don’t have either of these conditions but the app grouped me with it because I put joint pain) Currently a sophomore in high school and I missed over a week plus today because of how debilitating my pain is. It’s frustrating that unless I’m at that point my parents don’t see how painful it is. I currently use a cane, but recently pain has been spreading to my wrists because of my hips relying on my cane for stability instead of just being able to stand. I’ve been thinking about possibly getting forearm crutches or even better, a wheelchair, though my parents constantly tell me “I don’t need one” or that “Only people with [condition] need that” or even that I just need to do physical therapy exercises. It’s super frustrating and difficult to advocate for myself, doctors especially, since my parents (despite being the ones that dealt with my conditions and surgeries when I was younger) have a more valued opinion than me. At least it seems like that

Have you asked to speak to your doctors without your parents if you are over 16 this is something you can request, it doesn’t mean they can’t ask about it later unless it’s birth control or HIV related in most states but it would help you get your doctors to listen to you and hopefully help decrease your pain

Thank you so much, I’m definitely going to keep trying to get them. Unfortunately, I don’t think anything will happen unless something serious happens and I desperately need it. I’ll check both of those websites out and possibly ask for them as a graduation gift possibly(?) The only person who understands my pain is my Nana and she’s even advocated on getting them for me, though my parents said no.

I'm telling you, forearm crutches are the way to go to eliminate some of that wrist pain (if it helps, you can mention that forearm crutches are something you can buy without a doctor's referral or anything, just like a cane)! Some websites I would check out for good forearm crutches are CoolCrutches or Smart Crutch. They are a little bit more expensive but they do have a lot of fun colors/patterns. I hope you find that as you get older, you are able to advocate for yourself more. I found, in college, I was able to shed some of the guilt of holding my conditions back while also learning to speak up for my needs more, especially when my parents couldn't be around for every doctor's appointment!

@goblin49 I’ve been considering forearm crutches. Are they good for balance and dizziness? Also is there anything I should consider before getting them?

@Emrys.the.warrior I feel like they are, they have a little more of a learning curve than other crutches, but in my opinion once you get used to them they are so much better and much more steadying. I would say try to figure out what you're wanting in the crutches: I prefer mine to have ergonomic grips and full arm cuffs. Also look into different feet for the crutches, some are def better than others.
