Hi everyone! I have IBS-D (diarrhea based) and want to know how you guys cope with the fear of traveling. I’ve developed generalized anxiety disorder from my condition and it’s controlling my life! I’m trying exposure therapy and of course that’s difficult in itself. Any meds, tips or tricks you guys could give would be appreciated.

I pack my own snacks. If it’s a road trip, then I also pack my own meals. I have purchased a cooler that will go down to both refrigerated temperatures / freezer temps as well as a hot plate. No stress if you know what you are eating. 😉. As far as eating out, I research restaurants on the find me gluten app and then I will Facebook message that particular restaurant to get more info. Start off with day trips until you get more comfortable and confident.

Breathing helped me calm down a lot, but it took a lot of practice and I set reminders to get in the habit. Meditation may work too as an alternate tool. It’s a lot of trial and error.

Have you noticed the breathing exercises actually working? I’ve tried them but can’t seem to stick with it.

Pre-covid I was traveling frequently for work. I also have IBS-D with anxiety and planes and long car rides are a trigger. Doing breathing exercises for 10 mins in the morning and 10 mins at night (tons of breathing apps out there) prior to and day of travel, Imodium before leaving the house, and Xanax when I got on the plane has helped me. My doctor has also recommended CBT therapy, but I have not done it yet. Good luck!
