I got IV prednisone in the ER two nights ago and the RN prescribed me five days of oral prednisone. I had to get the pills compounded so I haven’t started taking them yet, but I don’t feel any effect from the IV prednisone. How long does it usually take before the medicine is helpful?

@chronic_in_college Prednisone is the BEST at beating inflammation when needed- it also has the worst psychological and physical side effects of any other drug I have taken. So it’s the best, but it’s also the worst!!

IV prednisone is usually a drug called methalprednisone, which is more of a short acting, immediate relief tool; so you will probably only get the benefits from it for up to 24 hours after it being administered. Oral prednisone, on the other hand, is slow acting and longer lasting (half-life of around 24 hours or so). You should feel the effects of the oral route within about 48 hours (or at least that’s how it works with me). Here for any time you want to talk prednisone- it’s the best worst drug ever

I haven’t taken the IV prednisone only the oral one, but it immediately helped my chronic pain (due to an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder)

Depending on what the steriods are for, you may not feel much from the IV prednisone.. you may start to notice more of a difference after taking the oral steriods /depending on how high the dose is.
